The bobcat (Lynx rufus) is an endangered species by the Red List of Threatened Species International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). However, habitat fragmentation and human persecution led to the reduction of some of their populations, especially in the middle - western US. Over the past 20 years, trade with the skin has made this species more intensively hunted the cat. It is pursued in many parts of Mexico by the belief that predation on sheep has a significant effect on livestock. Included in Appendix II of CITES convention on trafficking in endangered species.
